Probably the oldest of all the songs is this one. Castle was originally written in three parts. This is part 2. I wrote the Castle trilogy in 1975. I was eighteen.
The first band to play Castle was Opposite Edge in Montreal. Jules Hanon in Toronto also played a version between 1980-1982. I recorded a studio version in 2003 but never finished it and it sits in its unfinished form in my archives.
The idea behind Castle comes from me living in my father's house from 1972 - 1976. I never considered it a home. It was my father's castle and I had to leave to make my own life which I did when I was 19.
This is not an angry song. It is a song about the need for independence.
Interestingly it works for me just as well when I am older.
lyrics
Too bad – Well I’m not glad about the way things are…today
It’s late – The hour’s here and now I start to pray
I’m crazy – Everyone says it’s in my head
But I’m not lazy – I won’t stand here still and fade away
Drink up – You’re looking down in amazement at your empty cup
Cool down – The more you lose yourself the more you mess it up
I’m crazy – Everyone says it’s in my head
But I’m not lazy – I won’t stand here still and fade away
I’m glad – But I’ll have to buy some time so that I’ll understand…today
It’s great – The loss of all that I appreciate
I’m crazy – Everyone says it’s in my head
But I’m not lazy – I won’t stand here still and fade away
Look up – And tell me that you’ve had enough…today
And stop – Do not try to deceive me with your empty cup
I’m crazy – Everyone says it’s in my head
But I’m not lazy – I won’t stand here still and fade away
