Written in 1975 when I was 18, this song was part of a larger grouping known as "Veil Scar". The project was intended to be a rock opera. I have tried to write an opera several times and have so far not be able to do it the way I want.
'The Mailbox' deals with the idea of one's identity.
lyrics
The people have seen a wish down the river
Forever they’ve been alone together
And besides the weather
What makes the mailbox rattle at night
I’ve seen a lot of anger – I’ve seen a lot of pain
I’ve spent years inside it and the people just the same
God only helps me know
What makes the mailbox rattle at night
Allow me to feel that wish down the river
Tell them to wait until I can be with her
For besides the weather
What makes the mailbox rattle at night
The morning seems to be the same
It hasn’t changed since yesterday
The rain still beats down hard against my door
If I awake I’ll be afraid
Now’s not the time
My hears me say
I’ve already felt the rain
I need no more
I hold the covers to my chin
Knock .. knock .. knock .. knock
I let them in
The rain still beats down harder on my floor
The people have seen a wish down the river
Forever they’ve been alone together
And besides the weather
What makes the mailbox rattle at night
