about

I wrote this song in 1974 when I was 17. I was never able to record it to my satisfaction and no band I was ever in could get a handle on it either. That is until now.

When I was young I looked at life as being much too long. I couldn't imagine getting old. What 17 year old does. It also deals with sexual identity; something that I, while not having all that much problem with, knew it was there and sometimes I did feel it. This song has always warmed me even though as I grew older the words became fairly trite. But now I am hearing them differently yet again.

I am very happy that this song has finally been recorded.

Note: This song was recorded without the use of a click track. It has tempo changes and that is what probably made it difficult to play and record in the past.

lyrics

When it comes that you’re laughing no more
Go check the score that you came with
When it comes – when yesterday’s near
But tomorrow is here to contend with

Then you swiftly pass the rivers
As you cease discerning secrets
That is stashed behind the billboards of our land
After all these mile-long hours
You just can’t believe it’s coming
You are the actor in the play – a hero all the way
With nothing more to say than it’s OK

When it comes that you lie on the floor
Hungry for more than you came with
So it comes that time has to pass
You’re out on your ass that you’re born with

Life has a reason but it doesn’t know the meaning
Of the words written on the bathroom wall
Prepare your voices and join in the chorus
That is on it’s way back home; a fool too late to roam
The stage is set; the lights go out on you

1:07 … and the girls become women
Sweeping up floors for their brothers and sisters
Life envelopes the mind and drowns it in their fears
We fail…we cry…we live

1:09 … and the boys become men
Scanning the playground they fight to win friends
They hear the whistle blow so it’s time for them to go
But who will stop the show
Not I…I cry…I live

Not soon enough we stop

1:11 … and the boys become women
Sweeping up dirt from their broken heaven
Not me he cries alone – who can understand
