This song goes back to 1985. It was part of a 6 song set played by a band I called 'The Dead Of Night'. It was the only time I played guitar on stage during my 6-year stint in the Toronto music scene. The band lasted less than a year. it was only meant as a fun thing to do. I was in a serious band at the time - Deadbeat.
In The Hatchery is about remembering one's childhood - both good and bad memories. I am a realist. But I love my childhood and I sometimes think about how much fun I had growing up and how gentle it all was.
lyrics
In the corner of the classroom
In the big world join the butchery
In the hollow stir up the fire
Remember your life in the hatchery
In your exile under the clouds you
Reject the morals of the family
And in your mind you turn back the clock and
Enjoy the good life in the hatchery
In the order of disorder
They regulate entangled uniformity
And in the backwoods way of thinking
Move ever closer to the hatchery
